Bigger sensors gather more light, so they handle dim rooms better and blur backgrounds more easily. Phone sensors are tiny, then 1-inch compacts, then APS-C, then full-frame. Bigger is not automatically better — it also means bigger, heavier, pricier lenses.
Measured in millimeters. Small numbers (16-24mm) are wide: lots of room, good for landscapes and tight spaces. Middle numbers (35-50mm) look close to how you see. Big numbers (85-200mm) are telephoto: they compress the scene and flatter faces. Zoom lenses cover a range; prime lenses are one length but usually sharper and better in low light.
Try it at home: Stand still and take the same photo at your phone's 0.5x, 1x, and 3x. Notice how the background grows or shrinks.
In-body or in-lens stabilization saves handheld shots and walking video. Modern subject-tracking autofocus is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade on new cameras. Megapixels above roughly 24 rarely matter unless you print huge or crop hard.
One camera (or your phone), one fast prime like a 35mm or 50mm, a spare battery, two memory cards, a microfiber cloth, and a small tripod. Add lights and audio gear before you add a second camera body.
Try it at home: Shoot for a full week with one focal length only. It teaches composition faster than any new lens.
